Lennart Axelsson

Lennart Axelsson, a Swedish born trumpet player and now living in Germany, is considered to be “the best European jazz trumpet player” combining the almost unlimited technique of a James Morrison with the creativity of a Clark Terry. For many years Lennart was the lead and solo trumpet player with James Last Big Band touring all over the world and is featured on over one hundred of Last’s recordings with many going gold in Europe.

After leaving the Last orchestra Lennart joined the NDR (North German Radio Big Band), where he for may years was the featured trumpet soloist.

Lennart is now a frequent guest soloist at various jazz festivals and clubs primarily in Europe as well as several appearances in Western Canada where he last played with the Swedish group “Dixie Talks” at the Penticton Jazz Festival in 2012. Throughout his music career he has made guest performances with Chet Baker, Harry Mancini, Bill Horman, Sal Nestiko, Toots Thieleman and others including sitting in with Count Basie, Buddy Rich and Quincy Jones orchestras.

This year Lennart is bringing a group of mostly german “all star” musicians who he frequently plays with calling their style “Happy Jazz”. They will be a featured band at the Penticton Jazz Festival on September 8, 9 & 10 at well as one performance in Salmon Arm on September 7.  This will be Lennart’s 3rd appearance at Salmon Arm and each time for a “sold out” audience.
